The Choirboys

Kein Aldrich-Film wurde so negativ aufgenommen wie THE CHOIRBOYS: Indem er Joseph Wambaughs Erfolgsroman über die täglichen Herausforderungen einer Gruppe abgestumpfter und brutaler Polizisten mit respektlosem Witz unterwanderte, zog sich Aldrich nicht nur den Zorn des Autors zu. Wie bei KISS ME DEADLY stellte er die Romanvorlage auf den Kopf (obwohl er ihr inhaltlich sehr nahe blieb) und zeigt, dass die LAPD-Cops eigentlich „Sturmtruppen sein wollen“. Sittenbild einer Gesellschaft voller Sexismus, Rassismus und Homophobie. Der urbane Polizei-Albtraum entfaltet sich als Serie von größtenteils komödiantischen, sogar albernen Vignetten: Die Welt versinkt in moralischer Zersetzung, aber was Aldrich in Hustle noch als Tragödie schilderte, wird hier zur offensiven Farce. Alle Gewalt und Kriminalität gehen letztlich von den Polizisten aus. Trotz der satirischen Intentionen ist THE CHOIRBOYS Aldrichs düsterstes Porträt einer feindlichen Welt. (C.H.)

No Aldrich film was received as negatively as THE CHOIRBOYS. By subverting Joseph Wambaugh’s bestselling novel about the daily challenges faced by a group of jaded and brutal police officers with irreverent wit, Aldrich incurred not only the wrath of the author himself. As with KISS ME DEADLY, he turned the source material on its head (while remaining quite faithful to its content), revealing that the LAPD cops essentially “want to be storm troopers.” A portrait of a society rife with sexism, racism, and homophobia. This urban police nightmare unfolds as a series of largely comedic, even downright silly vignettes: the world is sinking into moral decay, but what Aldrich portrayed as tragedy in Hustle becomes an unapologetic farce here. Ultimately, all the violence and crime stem from the police officers themselves. Despite its satirical intentions, THE CHOIRBOYS is Aldrich’s bleakest portrayal of a hostile world. (C.H.)
