C'est pas moi

Was für ein Kinoglück, dass aus der Ausstellung nichts wurde, die das Centre Pompidou ursprünglich mit dem Regisseur machen wollte! Auf die Anfrage des Museums – Wo sind Sie, Leos Carax? – antwortet er mit einem souverän unordentlichen Selbstporträt. Jegliche Auskunft schillert zwischen Autobiografie, Film- und Zeitgeschichte. In gerade einmal 42 Minuten inszeniert er einen atemlosen Reigen der Assoziationen. Der Weg von Vertov über Chaplin zu Nina Simone ist für ihn kurz. Blitzgescheit meditiert er in diesem fulminanten Zettelkasten über sein Medium und seine Meister; Godard darf natürlich nicht fehlen als cinéastisches und spirituelles Leitbild. (Gerhard Midding)

“Beauty imposes the blink of an eye.” It’s ironic, Leos Carax seems to be saying, that the world demands we stop looking in order to keep seeing. How can someone who makes images, a filmmaker, pay heed to this idea? By drawing on what has already been filmed, by returning to images that already exist, by choosing not to create new ones, with a few small exceptions. In the blink of an eye, we now see what we have already seen, but with a fresh gaze, the light has changed, the music too, everything is different. In clear tribute to Jean-Luc Godard, whose typography and voice he imitates, Carax embarks on an personal, essayistic journey through (his own) cinema and (his own) life in C’EST PAS MOI, both deeply intertwined and powered by the twin motors of love and beauty. Jumping from image to image, some created by him, the rest by others—all of them suitably credited—Carax revisits his own history, the (recent) history of images and his lasting engagement with cinema and a woman: Katerina Golubeva, actress and mother of his daughter. It’s a film that can be read in so many ways: a hymn, a psalm, a beautiful and enthusiastic farewell. (Gonzalo de Pedro)
