Ce n'est qu'un au revoir

Die Abschlussklasse des Internats steht unweigerlich an der Schwelle eines neuen Lebensabschnitts. Aber aus dem Garten Eden lässt man sich nicht gern vertreiben. Mit lebhafter Geduld begleitet Brac die letzten Wochen des Schuljahres in Diois, einem pastoralen Idyll in den provenzalischen Voralpen. Zärtlich nimmt er die Ausgelassenheit (Matratzen-Domino im Flur!) und den Ernst der aufgeweckten Schülerinnen in den Blick. Sie sind mit der Unbeständigkeit des Lebens vertraut, doch die Trennung von den Kameradinnen fällt ihnen unendlich schwer. Aber weil er sie so genau kennengelernt hat, kann Brac von ihrem Abschiednehmen voller Zuversicht erzählen. (Gerhard Midding)

Aurore, Nours, Jeanne and Diane are in their final year of boarding school in Drôme, southeastern France. What unites them is the small family they have formed with their classmates, their walks by the river, their banter and games in their rooms, their shared political aspirations. Soon all this will change as they make their way to university, far from the friendships and safe environment they have thus far enjoyed. With considerable insight and a playful tone, Guillaume Brac captures key moments of this crucial moment in life, where the intimate and the carefree are overshadowed by insecurity and bitterness at impending separations which, for many, echo older wounds. An elliptical narrative that combines observation and first-person narration, the film captures the multiple layers of emotion felt by each of the protagonists, avoiding sentimentality and generating true intensity. It also paints the collective portrait of a politicised and restless generation and its ontological questions, both timeless and contemporary. What it’s like to plan your future or to have children in a world so uncertain and absurd? Such awareness and sensitivity does at least hold promise. (Nepheli Gambade)
