Bereits zum vierten Mal entfesselt Lanthimos Emma Stones wilde Schauspielenergie und holt dafür zum zweiten Mal Jesse Plemons dazu. Sie brilliert als roboterhaft-selbstoptimierte Unternehmenschefin und er stürzt sich in die Rolle des verlorenen Verschwörungstheoretikers, der sie entführt. Denn er hält sie für eine der Außerirdischen, die die Auslöschung der Menschheit planen. So Lanthimos-typisch absurd die Eskalation in einem einsamen Haus in den Wäldern Georgias auch erscheint: Mit ihren grotesken Überdrehungen, bei denen schwarzer Humor immer wieder in blutigen Horror kippt, spiegelt sie letztlich nur den groben Wahnsinn der Gegenwart. Explosive, daring and wickedly funny, BUGONIA delivers pure entertainment through absurdist sci-fi. Yorgos Lanthimos reimagines Jang Joon-hwan’s SAVE THE GREEN PLANET! (2003) with three powerhouse leads (Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons and newcomer Aidan Delbis) who dive into larger-than-life roles where social classes and worldviews clash. Teddy, an underprivileged worker and beekeeper, will believe any conspiracy theory; Michelle Fuller, the ruthless head of a big pharma company, embodies a ruling class that feigns fairness while exploiting others. Convinced she’s an alien plotting humanity’s downfall, Teddy abducts her with the help of his troubled cousin Don. Chaos erupts. In the claustrophobic confines of Teddy’s basement, Michelle fights for her life as a chain of cruel twists spirals into escalating violence, amplified by Jerskin Fendrix’s gut-wrenching score. Joining the fray are an intrusive policeman and a sick mother, who are sucked into whirlwind of grotesque situations that fuel the film’s blood-soaked satire. The shocking finale catapults viewers into another dimension, while the melancholic strains of “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” leave us reflecting on the fragility of our planet’s future.
