The second movement does not linger over the years of Borges’s greatest literary accomplishments before his eventual blindness, but turns its attention instead to marginal biographical details marked by unexpected twists. A manuscript dictated to his mother, for instance, may have been intended as a novel centred on four friends, a project supposedly abandoned; yet Llinás conjectures that within this draft lies the seed of INVASIÓN (1969), the Hugo Santiago film for which Borges wrote the screenplay. For Llinás, the hypothesis that Borges left clues to his own life while imagining a biographer with a detective’s instincts becomes almost a certainty. He continues to scrutinise texts and photographs with a magnifying glass, a gesture that encapsulates both the method and the constructive spirit of the film. There are further journeys—to Austin and Cambridge—and new key figures are connected to episodes in Borges’s married life. From this “Aleph of the banal,” Llinás draws considerable insight, warding off mere gossip while revealing the extent to which such ordinary facts may have shaped Borges’s artistic sensibility.
