Avec amour et acharnement

Jean und Sara sind ein Paar mit Geschichte. Er hat einen Sohn aus einer früheren Beziehung; sie war einst sehr in einen anderen verliebt. Jean musste eine Gefängnisstrafe verbüßen und hat seine Arbeit verloren. Trotz alledem zeigen die ersten Bilder die beiden innig verliebt und glücklich. Dann begegnet Sara auf der Straße ihrer einstmaligen Liebe wieder und nichts mehr ist wie vorher. Mit zwei herausragenden Darstellern, einem präzisen Blick und großer Sensibilität für die Ambivalenz von Gefühlen erzählt Denis von der Macht der Liebe, die binden, aber mehr noch zerstören kann. Claire Denis’s AVEC AMOUR ET ACHARNEMENT (“With Love and Tenacity”) has at various points also been called FIRE and BOTH SIDES OF THE BLADE. This identity crisis seems particularly fitting for a work that is highly protean and even a bit slippery beneath its standard love-triangle exterior. Sara and Jean have been together for ten years. Jean’s old friend Francois contacts him out of the blue with a business opportunity. But Francois is Sara’s ex-husband, and his re-entry into her life stirs unresolved feelings. This much is clear. But for a film centered on desire and infidelity, Denis withholds much of the context one might expect. At times, AVEC AMOUR suggests the outline of a psychological thriller, with Denis’s world-class actors navigating expansive negative space. Key details (the reason for Jean’s decade-long stretch in prison, the specifics of Sara’s previous relationship with Francois) remain shrouded in mystery, while other aspects of the film (Sara’s work as a radio personality, Jean’s troubled relationship with his son) do not so much impinge on the main characters’ lives as exist on a parallel plane. Denis asks her viewer to test out, then set aside genre conventions in order to focus instead on emotional duress in the absolute present tense. (Michael Sicinski)
