Anoche conquisté Tebas

Die „Heilige Schar“ war eine Eliteeinheit der antiken thebanischen Streitkräfte, die ausschließlich aus männlichen Liebespaaren bestand. Vor diesem Hintergrund will die Gruppe junger Männer gesehen werden, die sich im Rahmen einer Sumpfwanderung in Gegenwarts-Galizien über gemeinsame Schlachterfahrungen austauschen. Später entspinnt sich in den Ruinen eines römischen Badehauses tatsächlich ein Dialog mit historischen Soldaten und es schälen sich, während es Nacht wird, Themen heraus: Männlichkeit und Intimität, emotionale Verletzlichkeit und Freundschaft, Identität und Erinnerung. By the shores of the Limia River in Galicia sits a Roman settlement from the first century. In the 1940s, the Spanish dictatorship built a dam in the river, creating an immense artificial body of water near this site. During the dry months, the water level drops and the Bande baths emerge, revealing thermal waters once used by Roman soldiers to ease their pains and fatigue. Responding to this site’s ephemeral nature, ANOCHE CONQUISTÉ TEBAS explores ideas about time, as different layers of history swirl together in these steamy waters. A group of young Portuguese men crosses the border in search of these baths, speaking of fictional wars they fight on their screens. A tour guide urges a group of tourists to imagine those who once found these warm waters below their feet for the first time. A small army of tender Roman soldiers rest and heal under the clean sky. The film lingers with them, always close, making room for intimate conversations. As the day turns into the night, they pour out their souls. Gabriel Azorín’s first feature examines the soft edges of masculinity and the ways men relate to one another when time is miraculously on their side. (Lucía Salas)
