Der Gewinner der diesjährigen Goldenen Palme in Cannes ist in mehr als einer Hinsicht eine Überraschung. Regisseurin Justine Triet wagt eine aufregende Mischung aus dialog-orientiertem Gerichtsfilm und modernem Beziehungsdrama. Die Szenen vor Gericht erzeugen auch ohne kühne Plotwendungen und rhetorisch brillante Plädoyers Hochspannung, das sich abzeichnende Ehedrama lädt statt zum Mitfühlen zur Analyse ein. Es ist die schwierige Geschichte einer Familie und eines Todes, der viele Rätsel aufgibt. Vor allem aber der Film einer Ausnahmeschauspielerin, Sandra Hüller, die ganz und gar in der Rolle aufgeht und dabei doch ganz und gar bei sich bleibt. (Barbara Schweizerhof)

The 2023 winner of the Palme d‘Or, Justine Triet’s muscular courtroom drama plumbs the intricacies of a marriage with bracing originality and cerebral aplomb. An homage to Otto Preminger’s 1959 classic ANATOMY OF A MURDER, but with a feminist twist, this wintry, Grenoble-set thriller follows a successful author, Sandra (Sandra Hüller), who has been accused of murdering her husband after his lifeless body is found outside their remote chalet. Penned by Triet and her husband, the writer-director Arthur Harari, the film spins a web of jealousy, trauma and writerly egotism that eludes the law’s quest for concrete truth and moral absolutism. The deeper the relationship, the more slippery the emotions churning behind the façade become, a lesson the couple’s blind 11-year-old son must confront when he steps in as the trial's key witness. As in Triet’s previous work, fiction and reality blur to create a rich psychological portrait bolstered by clever twists and poignant flashbacks. Featuring a rivetingly edgy performance by Hüller, ANATOMIE D’UNE CHUTE is Triet’s most assured—and most haunting—study to date of a difcult woman and those she hurts and loves. (Beatrice Loayza)
