Les Amandiers

Auch Valeria Bruni Tedeschi gehörte Ende der 1980er-Jahre zu einer Gruppe junger Auserlesener. Damals wurde sie am „Théâtre des Amandiers“ angenommen, der berühmten Schauspielschule in Nanterre unter der damaligen Leitung von Patrice Chéreau und Pierre Romans. Jetzt erinnert sie sich an die Zeit ihrer Ausbildung mit einem autobiografischen Film über eine Clique angehender Schauspielerinnen und Schauspieler: Die Gelegenheits-Regisseurin zeigt deren Erfolge und Rückschläge, die Lieben, Leidenschaften und Verzweiflungen im AIDS-Zeitalter – in einem Film, der die ungestüme Energie des Jungseins auf die Leinwand überträgt. Energy, freedom and a passion for acting shine through right from the opening of Valeria Bruni Tedeschi’s LES AMANDIERS. We are in the early 1980s. Aspiring young actors must impress the jury of Nanterre’s legendary Les Amandiers Theater School with their flamboyant, haunting auditions, although only nineteen will be chosen. In her fifth autobiographical feature-length film, actress-director Bruni-Tedeschi recreates her experience as a student at the Les Amandiers Theatre School 35 years later, which was founded by Patrice Chéraud and run by Pierre Romans. The film focuses on Stella, the director’s alter ego, but it is ultimately a vivid group portrait. A skillfully crafted script fluidly blends the director’s imagination and memories to create an intense, joyful and melancholic work, portraying the young actors’ wild energy and total dedication. Life on stage flows into real life and vice-versa, in endless turmoil. The protagonists – superbly embodied by the film’s cast – move from school to the actors studio, and finally, to rehearsals for Chekhov’s Platonov with Chéraud. Amid turbulent loves, anxiety about AIDS, drug use and an irrepressible lust for life, they eventually learn that their job is to get on that stage and always give it their best, whatever might happen.
