Journalist and filmmaker Jocelyne Saab, born in Beirut in 1948 and died in Paris in 2019, also worked as a war correspondent from the beginning of the 1970s onwards. This work resulted in a body of films that is both a chronicle and a political reflection. The so-called “Beirut Trilogy” brings together testimonies documenting the Lebanese Civil War from within.
The second programme, “No past, no future”, presents three films depicting the Middle East in a state of upheaval, including IRAN, L’UTOPIE EN MARCHE (1980), about the ambivalence of a revolution in which the future mechanisms of control and repression are already beginning to emerge. Saab’s cinema is one that thinks from the perspective of the Other and is sustained by a combination of love for the victims and irony towards those in power. These are films that acquire a new urgency today.
With Mathilde Rouxel (Jocelyne Saab Association) in attendance.
