Etwas ganz Besonderes
Home Stories
“Who are you and what defines you?” A TV casting team asks this question and expects a ready-made, marketable answer. Lea, a young aspiring singer, has no such easy response to offer. Her silence marks the beginning of a quest for identity, which is deeply tied to her family’s fractured, unresolved story. Set in Greiz, Thuringia, the film excels in its finely observed ensemble dynamics, where generational conflicts and emotional divides are not resolved, but rather allowed to coexist. Anchored by Frida Hornemann’s quietly enigmatic Lea, the performances cut through sentimentality, exposing the gap between what is said and what lies festering beneath. Eva Trobisch further heightens this tension at a visual level, contrasting grainy images of everyday intimacy with the gloss of media spectacle. What emerges is a dense yet fluid portrait of a family and place, shaped by history without being confined by it. The music, particularly Lea’s understated performances, provides fleeting moments of connection. By resisting easy closure, the film reveals its greatest strength: a compassionate, clear-eyed understanding that identity is not a fixed narrative, but rather something lived, fragmentary and continuously evolving.
