Cohen's feature-length films include Museum Hours, Counting, Chain, Benjamin Smoke, Instrument, and World Without End. Shorts include Lost Book Found, Little Flags, and Anne Truitt, Working. His films are in the collections of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Whitney, Jewish Museum, and D.C.’s National Gallery of Art. They have been broadcast by ZDF/Arte, PBS, and the Sundance Channel. Retrospectives include Harvard Film Archive, Whitechapel Gallery, Indielisboa, BAFICI, Oberhausen, Gijon, and Punto de Vista. His multi-media show with live music, We Have an Anchor, was a main stage production in BAM's Next Wave and London’s Barbican. Evening’s Civil Twilight in Empires of Tin was commissioned for the 2007 Viennale and presented at the Gartenbaukino. His current show of film with live soundtracks, Gravity Hill Sound+Image, has been presented in Istanbul, Porto, New York City, and Knoxville, TN. Cohen has worked extensively with musicians including Patti Smith, Terry Riley, Fugazi, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, DJ Rupture, the Ex, Elliott Smith, Vic Chesnutt, Matana Roberts, and Jonathan Richman.
