For two years and a half the scriptwriter worked together with director Arnaud des Pallières on the textual basis for the history film and thus on her debut. Four months of preliminary research mere they needed to fit the historical, political and religious implications of Kleist's novella from the original context of action, Germany, into the filming location in the Southern French mountain region of the Cevennes.
