Das weiße Rauschen is Hans Weingartner's graduation film, shot entirely with a DV camera. Lukas arrives in Cologne to be with his older sister, Kati, who lives with her dopehead boyfriend, Jochen. Soon, Lukas starts to hear voices, which he tries to drown out with other sounds, but it is a losing battle. His usual placid and seemingly gentle personality becomes increasingly unpredictable, unbalanced, and aggressive.
It becomes quite clear that he suffers from severe attacks of schizophrenia. The film deals sensitively with the effects of schizophrenia without presenting a «thesis play». Although the main characters have to fight serious problems, they do not despair. They take on the challenge, developing tricks to succeed and get through life.
