Ulrich Seidl’s most controversial work is not, as some descriptions suggest, a film about bestiality, but instead a harsh portrayal of the unbalanced ways in which some pet lovers allow their relationships with their animals to supersede human contact and intimacy. It’s a chilling, almost stomach-churning look at loneliness and its consequences; Werner Herzog said that while watching this film he “had never looked so directly into hell in the cinema.” (Michael Wilmington)
