SÜHNHAUS tells the story of an unfortunate address: Schottenring 7, Vienna. This is where the Ringtheater once stood. When a fire broke out, almost 400 people died. This is where the emperor had a so-called “Sühnhaus” (“house of atonement”) built to make amends. This is where a young neurologist opened his practice. And moved out again, when one of his patients jumped to her death from the staircase. His name: Sigmund Freud. This is where the Gestapo set fire to the building to destroy documents. This is where Cold War fear was cast in concrete: Vienna’s secret control center, 18 meters below ground level. The essay film SÜHNHAUS approaches this address, at which misfortune schematically repeated itself. Is it possible that something strange is going on in this place? That it is a haunted house in the middle of Vienna? (Production note)
