Der Schmetterlingsjäger - 37 Karteikarten zu Nabokov (OmeU)

This film is a radical test-case for Godard’s notion that “a film must have a beginning, a middle and an end – but not necessarily in that order”. It is no biopic or filmed version of a book, though it does follow Nabokov’s traces closely, especially the novels “Ada or Ardor” and the autobiographical “Speak, Memory”. In both these novels the theme of time is central – and the film too, in content and form, is a meditation on the phenomenon of time. One principal shape this takes is a dialogue between a professor of philosophy (the real-life Parisian scholar Heinz Wismann) and a filmmaker (Klaus Wyborny): as they retrace Nabokov’s own reflections on the “texture of time”, they think through how they can make a film out of it all. Again and again we see them at the cutting table, discussing and criticizing the footage they have before them. At the same time the form of the film itself reflects the puzzle of time as Nabokov construed it. (Marleen Stoessel)

In the presence of Harald Bergmann, Ludivine van Gaver (editing) and the actress Katerina Medvedeva.

The OmdU version will also be screened.
