Yuri Ancarani’s new film is based in part on an art therapy program that works with the children of prison inmates. The film shows us their drawings, many of which are of the prison building itself. There is an emphasis on the castle-like shape of San Vittore, a visual confusion between the images the kids know from their picture books and this concrete edifice that plays such a key role in their lives. As SAN VITTORE shows us, we may be witnessing the foreclosure of these kids’ concept of freedom. And that may in fact be the ordinary function of the state. (Michael Sicinski)
