Mystery begins with the very title of Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest: has “mimic” been printed incorrectly? Then again, the entire plot is about an inaccurate copy: one day a man on a train asks a stranger for the time, and in return this woman follows him home, takes his place in the marital bed, even plays his cello part in an orchestra. And she is accepted and applauded by everyone, no matter how awful her performance: wife, children, the public. Once again, Lanthimos takes the common social structures of our everyday world, like this family, and reveals them to be freakishly unnatural and bizarre. (Adrian Martin)
