Argentine composer Mauricio Kagel was born in Buenos Aires in 1931 and settled (following Pierre Boulez's advice) in Cologne, Germany, in 1957. To this date, he has visited Argentina only twice, with 35 years in between both visits. The last one was in 2006, when he received a delayed official recognition. Apart from being a key figure in contemporary music, an artist talented in always surprising ways, Kagel is one of the nicest persons in the world, and süden not only shows him in both of these dimensions, it also portrays his return as if it were a political thriller. That idea of a-confirmed-musician-who-goes-back-to-his-country is perfectly told. The political dimension of the musician also sticks out, firmly: His definitions on culture and who is responsible for the creation of certain works and for putting them into circulation are very pertinent at this time.

This film is screened together with Le Temps qui reste (études musicales).
