Russian Ark has redefined the single-take machismo of Scorsese and De Palma by capturing an entire feature in one mind-bogglingly elaborate continuous shot. The film, actually shot on HD digital with a specially designed hard drive capable of recording up to 90 minutes of footage as opposed to previous HD limits of half that length , is a tour of the Hermitage Museum that transports the viewer through 300 years of Russian history. Blink and youll miss cameos by Catherine the Great and Anastasia among the hundreds of extras scattered in 35 different rooms, all lit simultaneously for the production and choreographed with mind-bending precision.
