Every year the Jeonju Digital Project, initiated in 2000 by the Jeonju International Festival (South Korea), commissions three filmmakers to make a digital short. The latest opus offers, with Return, a voice to three African directors for the very first time. In Mahamat-Saleh Haroun's Expectations Moussa returns to his village after an unsuccessful trip to the desert and has to face the men who lent him money for the journey. Nacer Khemir's The Alphabet of My Mother describes the prevarications of a woman whose son has disappeared. And Idrissa Ouédraogo's The Birthday is a depiction of Awa, a poor young girl who marries an older but wealthy man, whilst continuing a relationship with the man she truly loves. These three short films, each in its own way, are a window into the economic and social situation in Africa.
