Raymond Depardon
France 2000
90 min

French society was once predominantly agricultural, but it has changed radically over the last century. Raymond Depardon spent his childhood on a farm in the center of France and has witnessed these changes. In this film, he pays tribute to the country's small farmers, introducing us to the frequently harsh lives of families who struggle to make ends meet with very limited resources. His artist's eye reveals a world of young smallholders, single pensioners, and poor families, where inheritance and death duties are an everyday concern. Depardon displays a unique ability to convey the specific nature of these rural regions in scenes of work, everday relationships, and community life.
