LE PETIT LIEUTENANT
Antoine graduates from police academy and moves to the big city with the intention to make his contribution to the fight against crime. Captain Vaudieu takes him under her wing. Antoine fits easily into her team of work-hard, play-hard detectives. Then tragedy strikes and Vaudieu has to fight the memories that she used to drown in alcohol. Le Petit Lieutenant is Xavier Beauvois fourth feature film after such acclaimed works as Nord (1991) and Noublie pas que tu vas mourir (1995). In Le Petit Lieutenant, Xavier Beauvois subtle and impressionistic mise-en-scène dwells as much on his characters face than it follows the lead in this seeming film noir investigation. Whats important, seems to be saying Beauvois camera, is what lies just below the surface of emotions, looks and words left unsaid. (Agnès Catherine Poirier)
