FOUR WOMEN
The selection of short stories was significant, as it would in due course allow me the freedom to introduce new characters and situations and infuse sub-texts and layers into the narrative. It was not per chance that the four stories finally chosen here were on women. In the matrilineal society of Kerala, women enjoyed a few privileges in the family as well as the society. In some ways they were empowered but in other ways bound by convention. These four women are distanced from each other in time (the first story is set in the Forties and the last one ends in the late Sixties). Their professions are different. And each of them belongs to a different stratum of the society in class as well as consciousness. All the same there develops a thematic conflict within and between the four stories that finds a resolution at the end. (Adoor Gopalakrishnan)
