Lai is a perpetual gambler who whiles away his days at a pool hall. Sees days are monotonously spent at a photocopy center with its endless duplication. The Old Man has found peace and comfort taking care of a sick partner in his old age home. See would like to mend a rift created long ago between her and the Old Man, and Lai consistently refuses Sees requests to put an end to his betting.
At the Pusan International Film Festival, Ho Yuhang, a young, promising director, received a special mention for this film, to which he applied the same calm and melancholy touch as for his first feature film, Min. Sanctuary is a family drama that is revealed only gradually as the individual route of each of the characters unwinds. It is by letting oneself go into the realistic and quiet atmosphere set by the director around each character that one can understand the bonds between them. Ho Yuhang excels, in the purity of his images, in expressing the isolation and the personal block-ups which young See attempts to penetrate. (Farida Khali)
