Cui is a Chinese woman of Korean ancestry. With her son Chang-ho, she lives in a cement box barely disguised as a home, next to a group of prostitutes and within a stones throw of the train tracks. Cui survives by selling Kimchi, a pickled Korean side dish, to workers along the dusty roads that support various nondescript factories. As an illegal vendor, shes always in danger of having her cart impounded, but policeman Wang likes her food and arranges for her to bypass the usual red tape to get a license. This should be a bright moment for Cui, but she knows that life wont really get any better. Shes taken up with Kim, a fellow Chinese-Korean, more out of the need for human contact than emotional attraction. «Cuis tragedy results from the tensions between the powerful and the powerless, the haves and the have-nots, the opressor and the opressed. Bearing the burden of her fate, Cui tries hard to live a dignified life. A single mother in a foreign land, she endures unbearable hardship, yet makes her own living.» (Zhang Lu)
