The MAN WHO WASN'T THERE
Summer 1949. Ed Crane is a barber in a small California town. He is dissatisfied with his life. His wife Doris' infidelity presents Ed with an opportunity for blackmail that he thinks will help him to change it. However, Ed's scheme unravels and lays bare even darker secrets. Tonally sophisticated, formally deft, the elegantly vicious poetic crime movie inhabits a vivid, peculiar place of loss and corruption. The luminous, beautifully textured black and white cinematography and the evocative production design carry dense and allusive references to movies, 1940s detective stories, and the furious, bleakly stylized first-person novels of Jim Thompson.
