Yumiko is deeply troubled by the notion that she brings death to people. She blames herself falsely for the death of her beloved grandmother, who one day just left the family to return to her home village to die, and she has never fully come to terms with the fact that her first husband Ikuo commited suicide for no apparent reason. Now she is happily remarried and living in a village on Japans Inland Sea, but something inside her remains fearful and frozen. Koreeda Hirokazu made the film under the strong, benign influence of Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Hence the virtual absence of close-ups, the preference for wideangle lenses and the desire to avoid a spurious, unearned intimacy with the characters. The visual stylization reaches for spiritual truths, not naturalistic observation; the carefully composed, long-held images demand an almost meditative concentration from the viewer. (Tony Rayns)
