Bob Harris and Charlotte are two Americans in Tokyo. Bob is a movie star in town to shoot a whiskey commercial, while Charlotte is a young woman tagging along with her workaholic photographer husband. Unable to sleep, Bob and Charlotte cross paths one night in the luxury hotel bar. Lost in Translation is a comedy of dislocation set in a metropolis that is itself spectacularly decentered. Bob more than once confronts his own disembodied image in the semiotic jungle of Japanese pop culture. Hes a stranger in a strange land bemused by the ceremonial business meetings, the hotel rooms automatic curtains, the unfathomable craziness of the local TV, the pure sensory overload of Shibuya, the capacity for endless misunderstanding.
