Wang Guixiang and her husband, Changgeng, are eking out a living in Beijing selling pirate VCDs on the streets. When Changgeng becomes involved in a fight over a game of mahjong, he blinds a fellow player, and ends up in jail. Faced with a damages bill from the injured man, dumped with a five-year-old child by a friend who runs away, and having to move back to her village down south, Guixiang doesnt know what to do until her ex-boyfriend Li Youming comes up with a striking idea: Hearing her cry bitterly one night, he suggests that she becomes a professional mourner at funerals.
