Esken is a young boy who lives in a mining village in Southern Kazakhstan. With a curiosity for everything, he discovers the world in the years following the Second World War. He shares his life between his parents and his friends. At home, he meets some Japanese soldiers, for whom his father feels some sympathy. Esken enjoys playing small jokes with his friends, but they mostly like to observe the meanness and «below the belt» attitudes of these serious adults.
