The village of Sat-Jol rests in the mountain pass between Kazakhstan and China. Dwelling in Sat-Jol are a grandmother, her grandchild Bibinur and Maira, a distant relative from China. The latter is opera singer who has been told by her doctor not to sing for a year. If she does, she risks losing her voice for ever. Without work or voice, she is forced to fetch water for the grandmother and play teacher to Bibinur, who learns to count using corn. When what sounds like an innocent cough by Bibinur turns out to be a severe lung disease, Maira sells her concert dresses and donates blood to get money for medicine. Through a tragic error, however, she receives the wrong medicine. Maira is left with no other choice but to risk losing her only gift her golden voice.
