Dublin 1922, the IRA fights against the English occupying forces. The fact that during the war justice is merciless, learns the simple-minded, good-natured Gypo who betrays an IRA companion at a desperate moment for 20 pounds. He boasts of the money, squanders it and at the same time his conscience torments him. The IRA turns him in and judges him, but with the mother of the killed he finds forgiveness and at the end his peace. Ford’s foggy film shows a Judas as a suffering creature, as a martyr of his action and his guilt.
