THE FILMMAKER RECORDS A PORTION OF HIS LIFE IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST

One day Marie Menken handed me an old 8mm Keystone camera and said, «Gerard, go out and make a moovee!» It was almost like a command but friendly, mind you. Having gone from 16mm to 8mm was a whole new kind of vocabulary in reverse. It felt at times like I was keeping a notebook where pointing the camera was like writing with a pen. It was an exhilarating experience and so I shot footage every day wherever I happened to be, in the rain in Times Square, out at the beaches in the Hamptons that is, until one day the salty air corroded the turn-key on the camera and it fell off into the sand and that was the end of it!
