What’s the line between being a fan of art and being an artist, and when should one not cross that line? These are some of the questions explored in Exit Through the Gift Shop. Billed as a film by Banksy, the mysterious English street artist who exploded into the popular consciousness with politically-minded graffiti, the film turns the tables on Thierry Guetta, a guy who discovers that his cousin is the French street artist Space Invader. Eventually Guetta is introduced to Banksy, and the reclusive artist allows the hyperactive Frenchman to do what no one had ever before done: shoot him at work. After being inspired, Guetta returns home to Los Angeles as Mr Brainwash and becomes a manufactured street art superstar.
