Es war einmal ein König tells the paradoxical story of the shy young Heiko, who decides to leave his life in the provinces behind. On his last night in the small town, some young people seem to notice him for the first time. A fellow named Tommy in particular makes an impression on him. The sudden sense of belonging that Heiko feels does not change his decision to leave, but the sorrow of parting is accompanied by new hope.
