In the near future, in a Brazil ruled by the Party of Supreme Love, whose rituals and strength in numbers evoke the rise of Latin American evangelicals, women and men are judged by their ability to bear offspring. Such is the premise of Gabriel Mascaro’s third fiction feature DIVINO AMOR, a sly dystopian drama that upends one of the most enduring Christian myths – that of immaculate conception. Joana, the film’s heroine, believes so ardently in the sanctity of marriage that she volunteers to give counseling to couples who file for divorce in her governmental agency and then recruits them for her prayer group. Her own difficulties with getting pregnant bring anguish to her marital life, though also some intense pleasures (as always in Mascaro’s work, DIVINO AMOR revels in sensualist scenes). But soon Joana receives a divine blessing and faces a great mystery. It will test her marriage and bring the opprobrium of fellow believers, even though, ironically, it prophesies a new world. Mascaro mixes biblical fervor with sleek neon-infused cinematography and adds a extra dreamy touch in the voiceover – a tale narrated by not just any child. (Ela Bittencourt)
