It is summer and the start of vacation for 11-year-old Martin who lives on his parents' farm. He watches helplessly as his family falls apart. His mother lives shut away in her room. The older brother he adores drowns himself in alcohol, and his father, under the grandmother's thumb, is a powerless spectator to his family's decline. Even if his cat and Malika, the Moroccan maid, make him feel a little better, Martin decides it is time to put an end to all the confusion. Returning to the subject of the family in crises, as seen in his earlier film Plus qu'hier, moins que demain, Laurent Achard chooses with this dark and tortured film to present all of the action through the eyes of the boy Martin, whose numerous monologues structure the narrative. Static shots as well as the carefully crafted, minimalistic soundtrack underscore the sense of anguish pervading this isolated farmhouse, and the distress of its characters.
