“These are the men who decided not to play golf this weekend”, the narrator says in a sinister voice in the trailer of DELIVERANCE. Tired of civilization, Lewis, Ed, Bobby and Drew, four outdoor fanatics from Atlanta, decide to go canoeing on the dreaded rapids of the river Chattooga in Georgia before it is forever turned into an artificial lake. But the arrogant urban dwellers must soon face up to a ravished Mother Nature which retaliates in the form of nature-loving locals. This exceptionally grim adventure film is particularly critical of civilization, starring actor Burt Reynolds and inspiring numerous subsequent backwoods horror movies. In 1973 it was unsuccessfully nominated for the Oscar in the categories of Best Film Editing, Best Director and Best Picture.
