Ben Russell’s “psychedelic ethnography” refuses to orient its viewers in any specific time, place or subject matter. We are, instead, thrown into a flux of sensations, musical and dance performances, playful games and experiments. The opening citation of visual details and text from Gaughin is enough to signal the film’s intention of “decolonizing” our sensory encounter with certain people found in French Polynesia and Brittany. COLOR-BLIND is about seeing and imagining; and about remembering the past and protecting it from horrors like the French atomic tests of the 1970s. (Adrian Martin)
