No production at the Salzburg Festival was more eagerly awaited than Peter Sellars staging of Olivier Messiaens opera starring José Van Dam and Dwan Upshaw, with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Schönberg Choir. Its sucess was overwhelming, attracting excellent reviews and standing ovations. Jean-Pierre Gorins documentary traces the development of the production from rehearsals to first performances and includes interviews with the controversial director Peter Sellars, with Ronald Hamilton, José Van Dam and Dawn Upshaw.
