Claude Brasseur and Sami Frey meet Anna Karina in an English learning school. They compete for her love but take advantage of her naivety to prepare a robbery in a suburbian house.
The screenplay of BANDE À PART is thin, but the three characters’ behavior and the three actors’ behavior create original, charming and even pathetic scenes. They drive, they dance, they argue and they run through the Louvre Museum (which inspired me to a scene in VISAGES, VILLAGES). Even if the three characters come from a book, Frantz, Arthur and Odile belong to Jean-Luc Godard’s imaginary world. Hans Hurch loved Godard’s great creativity. Choosing that film is a wink at Hans and a smile at Anna Karina’s grace. (Agnès Varda)
