Ouyang Feng is being brought up by his elder brother and dreams of becoming a famous swordsman. When, years later, he has to decide between the woman he loves and life as an adventurer, he opts for the latter. Meanwhile, the young woman comes to terms with this and marries his brother. The carefree and wild life Ouyang Feng had dreamed of turns him into a cynic: on a day-to-day basis he has to consolidate the freedom of his dreams through decisions that are frequently of a bloody nature. After ten years of roving about, he opens a restaurant in the middle of nowhere and disaffectedly passes on murder contracts to young and penniless swordsmen who are longing for fame and appreciation, as he too had done in his youth. Every offer, no matter how sordid, is accepted and accomplished and the hot wind covers the corpses with crunching sand. Ouyang’s only friend in the midst of his loneliness is Huang Yaoshi, who feels utterly betrayed by life and particularly by love. A while ago he had met Murong Yang and had fallen in love with his sister and now Murong reappears on the scene once again…

The desire for strong feelings, the blindness in everyday life, a craving for recognition paired with mix-ups, along with anger about the fact that nothing in life turns out to be what it pretends to be. Wong finds a verbatim translation for this and has “recut” his early work, while retaining the basic plot, thus bringing back to mind Ashes of Time as the early essence of his work.
