Each film has a different man as its protagonist, each struggling to define and maintain a troubled relationship with a woman. The questions asked of each relationship, and therefore of each film, are very different. If Cavale is a thriller, Après la vie takes the form of a cop film. The central character, Pascal, is a cop with a terrible secret: His lover is totally reliant on morphine and he has to procure the drug for her. This brings him into the orbit of a local druglord who decides he will withhold Pascals supply until he kills someone for him setting off a terrible crisis in the cops life.
