When you suddenly feel the urge to return to the vocation that once seemed right for you, how do you get started again after so many years? Perhaps by following the simplest advice and filming what you know very well? In Angela Summereder’s case, this was the federal highway running between Ort and Ried im Innkreis, a stretch of road about 20 kilometres long which she took day in and day out. The area it passes through is home to the stories which have always played a decisive role in her work, from ZECHMEISTER (1981) via JOBCENTER (2009) to AUS DEM NICHTS (2015). Looking back, VERMISCHTE NACHRICHTEN occupies a particularly important position within her oeuvre. With her ‘partner in crime’ Michael Pilz behind the camera, she sets out in search of encounters, small-scale stories and impressions at petrol stations, country inns and supermarket car parks. Without obvious intention, and with a sense of restrained curiosity that is still open to every experience no matter how small, the film is a road movie in the truest sense of the word: one in which the road and every kilometre along it symbolise the path that Summereder took, step by step, back into her medium.
