This program explores Gomez’s approach to portraiture and its relationship with the personal and the collective, all linked to the first changes in the everyday lives of the lower classes following the revolution, which were not only material improvements but a complete transformation of rhythm and living. What is the place one holds for others? In IRÉ A SANTIAGO, she explores the feelings of the people of Santiago de Cuba. Mulato is a frame of mind, the film says, and that also becomes a way of shooting and editing. UNA ISLA PARA MIGUEL wanders through the construction of masculinity in the new Cuban identity: how does one become what one has to be, a man, a macho, even a student or a friend with a mind of his own? For its part, GUANABACOA: CRÓNICA DE MI FAMILIA tells the story of Gomez’s own people, a black family before the revolution, through its most hidden member: not the mother, the father, but the madrina, whose habits tell the story of what used to shape life.
