In 1977s THE DEVIL, PROBABLY, Robert Bresson showed us strangers on a bus spontaneously breaking into spirited discussion. Today, Darezhan Omirbaev – a notable member of the Bresson school – shows us bus passengers hooked into their phones, isolated in their own capsules. Yet if cinema still holds a magical power in this depressed world, it is in giving us a privileged glimpse of these passengers’ inner experiences. The tale of an alienated, lonely, pining teenage boy on his daily path to and from school, LAST SCREENING culminates, appropriately, in a melancholic, ghostly scene of film-going. (Adrian Martin)
