Hermann works for Vienna’s Municipal Department of Parks and Gardens. He and his team tend the parks every day and whistle at women. Because he makes himself unpopular with his superiors and colleagues, Hermann loses his job; later he’s thrown out of his parents’ apartment and is jailed for brawling. In between, he goes on a pub-crawl in the suburbs. Initially, he isn’t interested in a closer relationship with his girlfriend Vera, but maybe that could change – like so much else during this time ...
Hardly anyone is better at capturing the Viennese summers of the 1970s, in all their hovering between lightness and melancholy, than John Cook. He consistently devotes himself to everyday life, without being arbitrary. What is told here is a story of small happiness, of someone who is down and gets back on his feet again because “somehow, it has to work.” And this story is presented by someone who takes great pleasure in using cinematic means freely.
