Die ersten Tage

The First Day
Herbert Holba
Austria 1971
77 min
V'20

After the destruction of civilization, a group of adolescent nomads wanders through a “no man’s land between yesterday and tomorrow” and meets loners and other survivors. But deadly power struggles between the group and the newcomers soon arise. Is it even possible to live together in the apocalypse? “A cinematogram with music and sounds” is what Holba, a cineaste of the first hour, founder of the legendary ACTION film club and a true man of the movies, called his only feature-length film, which he dedicated to the Skladanowsky brothers and the German silent film directors Manfred Noa and Otto Rippert.
DIE ERSTEN TAGE is nothing less than an attempt to rediscover an original, pure cinema that nonetheless does not shy away from being political and pop. The background music was composed by the short-lived, now all the more cultic and revered Austrian prog rock band Paternoster. A trip that opens eyes, ears, hearts and brains! (fw)
